The Panorama in the Old World and the New

The International Panorama Council was delighted to have the opportunity to have its first annual conference in the ‘New World’ in November 2004. The Art Department of Hunter College of the City University of New York was proud to host this 12th International Panorama Conference. This came about after the Chair of the department, Sanford Wurmfeld, visited the site of the 11th International Panorama Conference in Altötting, Germany. Gebhard Streicher, one of the founders of the IPC and its President from 1998 to 2003, as Director of the Panorama Jerusalem and the Crucifixion of Christ in Altötting, Germany, had arranged for the exhibition of Wurmfeld’s Cyclorama 2000 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of his grandfather’s magnificent painting installation in Altötting. Gebhard Streicher invited Sanford Wurmfeld to visit Altötting and when he suggested the idea of an International Panorama Conference in New York, Sanford Wurmfeld immediately agreed to arrange for the hosting of the event at Hunter College.
